Hollywood Juniper (Juniperus chinensis ‘Torulosa’) Zone 5 to 9
Hollywood Juniper, sometimes called ‘Kaizuka’, Got it’s name because or the popularity in Hollywood when it was first introduced. It can be considered a large shrub or a small tree. The cone shaped foliage has a twisted look that is very artistic looking. They can be trained with a single trunk when young simply by cutting our branched competing for sun, or if left untrimmed it will naturally grow into a multi-trunked shrub. One of the great features of Hollywood juniper is the abundant amount of berries that it will produce. Light in color, The berries have a strong fragrance and smell somewhat like pine. Overall Hollywood Junipers are nice shrub if you want to add a unique look to your landscape with a shrub that is easy to care for and extremely tough.
Hollywood Juniper Landscape Use
Hollywood Juniper is mainly used as a specimen shrub to add a focal point, but has many other uses. They can be used as a privacy screen or a wind break when planted as a hedge. Space them 5 feet apart when planting a hedge to ensure that they grow together or can be planted closer if you want quicker privacy. Another good use for Hollywood juniper is to plant them on either side of an entrance to a driveway or an entrance to a house. When doing this, keep them spaced at least 5 feet away from a sidewalk, driveway or a house to insure they will not intrude and will cause more trimming. Used as a specimen shrub, you can use some smaller shrubs planted around it such as Saybrook Juniper or Old Gold Juniper to create good contrast. Hollywood Juniper would be a good shrub to plant in between two windows to add some height to your landscape and to break up a plain looking wall. To anyone who asks, I would highly recommend Hollywood Juniper.
Mature height: The average height is about 15 feet but I have seen them slightly larger if growing conditions are great.
Mature width: The average width is 10 feet but can easily pe trimmed into a smaller size if desired.
Soil type: Hollywood Juniper will grow in just about any type of soil including clay, sand and shale.
Growth rate: The growth rate is somewhat fast. They will grow about 8 to 15 inches a year on average.
Sun Exposure: They like full sun to part shade best, but i have seen them growing in full shade. If grown if full shade they will not get as thick and will not grow as fast/
Moisture: Water your Hollywood Juniper when first planted untill the roots are somewhat established. They are very drought tolerant. They do not do good in standing water, so if you have a wet area make sure that you plant it higher than normal.
